Report: Audit Slams Energy Star
An Energy Department audit has found that the department does not do enough to track whether manufacturers of products carrying the Energy Star label have earned it, the New York Times reported.
Energy Department inspector general Gregory Friedman conducted the audit, which covered appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators. One manufacturer, according to the report, tipped off the Department that one of its competitors- later shown to be LG- was affixing the label despite failing to meet the criteria.
A similar audit last year, by the Environmental Protection Agency, reached similar conclusions about TVs and computers.
