Mobile charging innovator Anker Innovations has announced for November sale an ultra-compact fast-charging wall charger under the Anker brand using the Power Delivery (PD) standard that is the first in the company’s new Atom series. The PowerPort Atom PD 1 ($29.99) was a year in development, said the company at a launch event last week in New York, and uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) components versus silicon components for better efficiency while enabled a smaller-footprint design – its chassis is slightly larger than a 5W stock smartphone charger, Around 40 percent smaller than a standard MacBook charger, it charges 2.5 times faster than a stock phone charger, offers universal compatibility, and weighs just 2.2 ounces. It features a single USB-C port that can dispense up to 27W of power – enough wattage to charge a Nintendo Switch or a MacBook.
Steve Yang, Anker CEO, pointed out that four billion chargers are shipped each year with each new device sold. “Do we really need all those?” he offered. He explained that by eliminating chargers boxed with each new product and instead adopting the use of a device such as the Atom PD 1, which can charge many devices, device ownership cost could be reduced, and 300,000 tons of waste could be eliminated per year. “At Anker, we’re fully behind this vision,” he said.
