Retail needs a shakeup. This isn’t some new realization that the industry is coming to. We all know that there’s a massive problem, especially with big box stores and malls. Fingers can be pointed at the online shopping experience, waning interest in material goods, and the economy, but the fact remains: retail needs some sort of resuscitation.
The impact of the retail meltdown is an increase in vacancy rates throughout the country. Nationally, the rate sits around 5.6 percent, but that number balloons when you look closer at some major metropolitan areas. The SoHo section of New York, for example, has vacancy rates up over 20 percent, while parts of Fifth Avenue are flirting with 30 percent.
