Apple Already #3 Smartphone Maker
Apple may have only been in the smartphone business for seven months, but the iPhone by itself has already put Apple in third place worldwide in smartphone shipments, the research firm Canalys reported Thursday, citing figures from Canalys.
According to the study, Apple is in third place worldwide with 6.5 percent market share, still well behind first place Nokia (53 percent) but within striking distance of #2 Research in Motion. The BlackBerry maker has 11.4 percent of the market, based on fourth-quarter figures; Motorola was slightly behind Apple, also at 6.5 percent.
“When you consider that it launched part way through the year, with limited operator and country coverage, and essentially just one product, Apple has shown very clearly that it can make a difference and has sent a wakeup call to the market leaders,” Pete Cunningham, the group’s lead analyst, said as part of the announcement.
