Apple Makes Good on Warning, Update Disables Hacked iPhones
Confirming a warning issued last week, iPhones hacked to use non-AT&T carriers are shutting down when users upload Apple’s latest software update for the device, the AP reports. The optional firmware upgrade, labeled 1.1.1, allows users access to Apple’s new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, among other enhancements.
According to initial reports from users, whether or not the upgrade disables an unlocked phone appears to depend upon which program was used to perform the hack in the first place. Third party applications written for the iPhone have, in some cases, ceased to function as well.
