Apple Now Officially #1 Music Retailer
Apple’s iTunes Music Store has officially overtaken Wal*Mart to become the #1 music retailer in the U.S., the AP reported Thursday, citing NPD Group statistics.
A report earlier that day, which cited an internal Apple e-mail based on preliminary NPD figures, had stated that Apple overtook Wal*Mart in January thanks to a surge in holiday gift cards, but had fallen behind the next month. NPD, however, said later in the day that the February stats put Apple over the top.
The chart from the e-mail as cited by Ars Technica, shows that Apple took 19 percent of the market share for music in January’s survey, compared to 15 percent for Wal*Mart, 13 percent for Best Buy, and 6 percent each for Amazon and Target. All companies’ online and brick-and-mortar sales were included in the totals.
