For Reaves, the consumer focus sets the ground rules for the entire appliance industry supply chain. "Both the retailer and the supplier must understand that the consumer is the customernot the retail outlet or the channel of distribution," Reaves said. "The customer decides when, where and how they will shop."
Current market conditions require efficient and coordinated use of assets, and Reaves said, "there is no room in our industry today for confrontational relationships between the retailer and supplier."
Robert Lawrence, executive director of Associated Volume Buyers and a 15-year veteran of Maytag, was slated to speak at AHAM's round table but did not, due to travel snafus. Interviewed afterward, he said. "Both sides [vendor and retailer] question whether the other is telling the whole story. If we're really going to make this seamless to the consumer, that level of trust needs to be changed."
