Appliance Shipments Fall Sharply
Factory shipments of all major appliances in the U.S. dropped 10.6 percent last month from a year ago, according to the Major Home Appliance Industry Domestic Shipment Report compiled by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.
For the year, overall appliance shipments dropped 6.3 percent to about 75 million units from about 80 million in 2006. Shipments in all areas decreased, except for the home comfort category, which increased 9.5 percent for the month, boosted mainly by a 67 percent jump in dehumidifier shipments.
Home laundry was the biggest loser, with shipments falling almost 13 percent in December, to 1.6 million from about 1.9 million a year ago. Total shipments fell 6.3 percent last year to 16.4 million from about 17.5 million in 2006.
