It's Beginning to Feel A Lot Like Chanukah
Are we about to discover that the independent audio/video retailer is going the way of the local hardware store? Can you be successful and profitable without a retail sales force? Should you carry iPod accessories and memory cards to ensure a good-selling holiday season this year? Can anyone get really excited about the two-to-three-percent increase forecasted over last year’s disastrous holiday selling season?
Since the new administration has come in, we have seen over three million jobs lost and unemployment at 10 percent (9.8 percent for those of you who believe the government is accurate about anything). Some states - Michigan for example - are seeing 18 percent, while youth unemployment is over 50 percent.
In addition we have seen seven million home foreclosures this year. Hyundai outsold Chrysler last month for the first time ever. This month is also the first month we pay out more for Social Security than we take in, as reported by Stuart Varney, guest speaker at the recent 2009 CEA Industry Forum in Arizona.
