As Works with Nest Program Sunsets, Control4 Promises Continued Support
To be fair, Google is making the right move from a smart home ecosystem perspective in shutting down the Works with Nest program in favor of a forthcoming Works with Google Assistant platform. But that doesn’t make the move any less frustrating for manufacturers that have poured time and effort into the soon-to-be-shuttered program as well as create confusion for consumers who will need to be re-educated or made aware of the coming changes.
Control4, though, is trying to get way out in front of those changes. No more than a few hours, maybe even minutes, after Google announced the changes during their I/O developers conference this week, the home automation platform issued a statement addressing the changes. In short, Control4 Sr. Vice President of Products and Services Charlie Kindel said the company will embrace the new Works with Google Assistant platform and that they’re developing new Nest drivers in cooperation with Google’s certification standards.
The long of it is that Google will effectively shut down Works with Nest on August 31, replacing it with the Google Assistant alternative. That means that all third party devices and automation platforms that currently support the former program (like Control4) will need to be updated. So, all Control4 systems that support devices like the Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect will require new Google-certified drivers in order to continue functioning as they’re intended to.
