At Toy Fair 2020: ScienceWiz Turns Smartphones into Microscopes
ScienceWiz, which makes STEM educational solutions, showed off its $29.99 auto-focusing Clip-On Microscope for smartphones and tablets (appropriate for ages 8 and above), which works in tandem with the camera lens on the phone to provide the functionality of a true microscope - not merely a magnifier, says the company - for budding scientists. The universal microscope clip includes a stand with metal clips to hold a standard microscope slide in place, and the light source is included in the basic package. One especially noteworthy feature is that users can also take photos of the magnified images as they are being viewed.
Magnification with the scratch-resistant lens is 200-400X optical and 500-1000X digital. The starter kit includes the autofocusing hardware needed to tether to the phone, a test slide and instructions. Pre-packaged pre-stained slide sets that cover plant biology, animal biology and bug biology are available at $7.99 each, with each package containing seven slides. The microscope will also work with standard pre-made sets of wet-mount microscope slides, says the company.
