Cutting Through the Noise
As this issue was being finished, Texas was still recovering from Hurricane Ike, the banking industry was going through its own natural disaster, Congress was debating bailout plans, home foreclosures were still piling up, jobless rates in some states hit records, oil prices were still fluctuating and our nation was caught up in both the serious and the trivial issues of the presidential campaign.
All of those issues can easily create enough distractions to keep our minds away from the business we’ve dedicated ourselves to. And that’s despite the fact that interest in our products has never been higher. We hear from the news and from our friends how tough times are for consumers. At Dealerscope, we hear from dealers struggling with changing paradigms, increased competition and decreased margins. However, overall our industry is doing extremely well.
At last month’s CEDIA Expo, despite a slightly lower turnout than last year, we heard repeatedly from vendors, custom retailers and integrators that their summer wasn’t nearly as gloomy as the general news might lead one to believe. Several told us that in some cases they had exceeded expectations and looked forward to closing out the year positively. That’s an impressive feat for 2008.
