The Spice of CE Life
More than $16 billion in accessories shipments are expected to pass through the retail channel this year, making the category a strong in-store and online traffic driver and a serious profit generator for every retailer.
Our annual accessories issue is filled with more of those optimistic stats, as well as forward-thinking stories to help you plan your accessories strategies during the next six months.
While the category is expected to grow seven percent this year, industry insiders are still talking about some disheartening numbers: 82 percent of consumers purchase accessories after buying the primary device, and 61 percent of them buy the accessory at a location different from their original point of purchase. Although those numbers popped up in CEA's "The CE Accessories Market: Insights and Opportunities" report last year, they are still relevant today, as Randy Schrock, a member of CEA's division board, notes in his column on page 58.
We hope CEA continues to study this side of accessories and releases its findings in time for our next accessories issue. Until then, retailers can help improve their accessories attach rates by following the basics: Let every customer know which products you carry that will improve the performance, looks and longevity of the core product; yes, the additional cost might exceed the fixed price the customer planned to spend on the core purchase, but that product will be fully optimized for just a few dollars more; and let customers know they can’t find this particular accessory at this low price at any other store.
