Texas AG Sues RadioShack
The RadioShack Corp. has been sued by Texas’ state attorney general, after employees at one of its stores in Portland, Tex., allegedly disposed of customers’ personal information improperly.
According to the complaint, filed by Attorney General Greg Abbott, thousands of customers had their personal information exposed to potential identity theft when employees at the Portland location dumped customer records, including credit card and Social Security numbers, in garbage containers behind the store. That the employees disposed of the information in such a way, without shredding it, constitutes a violation of the state’s Identity Theft Enforcement and Protection Act, the complaint said.
The suit is not a criminal prosecution but rather is an enforcement action aimed at assessing fines. As identity theft has become a more prominent crime in recent years, such actions by state attorneys general have become increasingly common.
