40 Under 40: A Look at the Industry’s Brightest Young stars
Sean Young, the 30-year-old owner of Sound Decision mobile electronics retailer and installer in Montgomery, Ill., receives the award for Best Advice, which was passed down to him by his father. “Hire the best attorney and the best CPA possible. Then hire someone to watch those lying bastards.” We’ll remember that.
Since somewhere in the world it’s closing in on lunchtime, we’d like to immortalize the words of Keith Meier, 37, senior vice president and general manager of Assurant Solutions, an extended warranty provider based in Atlanta, Ga. “My first thought when I read this question was: A good In-and-Out burger and a chocolate shake when I’m out on the West Coast,” he said in response to the “What Can’t You Live Without” question. “But at the end of the day, it’s having a supportive family which allows me to accomplish things in my professional life.” So much for guilty pleasures. We assume many of the finalists also share the same culinary passion as Meier when they’re travelingin California. It’s no wonder so many of them said they can’t live without some form of exercise.
In the “You Wouldn’t Know Unless You Lived There” category, Tony Grasso, 37, co-founder/vice president, sales & marketing at K2 Mounts in Chino, Calif., scores kudos for giving it up to his hometown of Dakota Dunes, S.D., just across the border from Sioux City, Iowa. “(South Dakota’s) got a great business climate to begin with…lots of tax incentives for business, no corporate income tax,” he said. “Plus there’s the quality of life—the ease of doing business and the friendliness of people. If you’re on the road a lot like I am, it’s kind of like a mini-vacation every weekend.” Tony, we’ll see you next weekend.
