Best Buy Closes Deal with AT&T Broadband
Best Buy on Monday, August 6, announced it had closed a deal with AT&T Broadband to offer AT&T Digital Cable and AT&T @Home high-speed cable Internet service to its retail customers. The deal seals a memorandum of understanding that the two companies had signed last fall when Best Buy began experiementing with interactive, multi-service provider retail kiosks selling broadband Internet access. Best Buy has ofered AT&T Broadband services at its Dallas stores since last fall.
Best Buy plans to begin selling cable modems within the next few weeks, according to a compan spokesperson.
The AT&T Broadband services are offered only at Best Buy stores in AT&T's service areas. Beginning later in August, about 138 Best Buy stores (out of more than 430 nationwide) will offer AT&T Digital Cable's more than 100 programming channels of programming. Approximately 117 Best Buy stores will sell AT&T @Home high speed internet access. Activation kits for either service—including a coupons for free installation, dollars off the first month's cable bill, free pay-per-view movies and a rebate for the purchase of a cable modem—are priced at $19.95 each.
