Best Buy Being Investigated in Conn. Over Bogus Intranet
Best Buy is being investigated by the attorney general of the state of Connecticut over an internal Web site that employees at two stores allegedly used to bilk customers out of sale prices. The company has blamed the ruse on “employee confusion” and “human error,” and vowed to cooperate, despite denying earlier that such a site existed.
As initially revealed by columnist George Gombossy of the Hartford Courant, at least two Nutmeg State locations used an internal Web site, one looking almost exactly like the public BestBuy.com site, to show customers that the products they wanted were listed as more expensive than the online price customers had previously seen on the public site. This practice led to more than 20 customer complaints.
Gombossy reported that Best Buy employees had admitted the second site’s existence, and even showed him how intranet site worked.
