Best Buy to Provide Minor-League Instant Replay
As Major League Baseball continues to weigh whether or not to adopt instant replay in its games, an independent minor league is going ahead with some use of the technology- with some help from a major CE retailer.
The Associated Press reported Monday that Best Buy has agreed to implement a system for the American Association, an unaffiliated minor league based in the Upper Midwest, that would allow the umpire at that league’s All-Star game to view instant replays of controversial calls.
The system would entail a mobile phone, equipped with both streaming video and TiVo, that the home plate umpire can use to pause, rewind, and fast forward the play. Best Buy also plans to have technicians on hand to help out when the All-Star Game is held at Midway Stadium in St. Paul July 22.
