Best Buy to Scale Back HD DVD and Blu-Ray Marketing
Home Media Retailing Magazine is reporting that Best Buy will be scaling back their marketing of high definition optical disc players this holiday season. Rather than putting the devices front and center, the retailer will have a single HDTV display. This may stem from frustration with the dilemma of trying to sell two competing incompatible formats to a public who may simply opt to wait and see which format wins before making an investment. That sentiment has been expressed in the past by Best Buy CEO Brad Anderson, who on more than one occasion has expressed dismay at the complications caused by the format war. At this year’s CES, Anderson told Reuters, “We are going to wind up with some number of consumers probably buying a format that dies, and we are probably going to wind up having to sell it to them. They are not going to be happy with us.”
