Blockbuster Announces Backing of Blu-ray
When it expands its inventory of high-definition DVDs for rental later this summer, the video rental giant Blockbuster will only stock those from the Blu-ray Disc format, the AP reported Monday. The chain had previously rented and sold both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats.
Blockbuster, according to the AP, made the decision because more than 70 percent of its high-def rentals were in the Blu-ray format.
The change will affect the 1,450 stores that will now carry Blu-ray for the first time. Both formats are currently available in 250 Blockbuster locations, and will remain so in those stores, but new stores that are part of the inventory expansion will carry only Blu-ray. Both formats will also continue to be available from Blockbuster’s online rental service.
