Blockbuster, amid financial difficulties, has moved forward with a plan to place DVD-rental vending kiosks in stores, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The company plans to place 10,000 Blockbuster Express machines by the end of next year, as part of a partnership with NCR Corp. NCR recently acquired TNR Holdings Corp., an existing movie-vending machine provider. Blockbuster Express' top competitor is Redbox, owned by Coinstar, which has 14,000 kiosks and partnerships with the likes of Walmart and 7-Eleven.
Recent struggles have forced Blockbuster to back off the launch of its new "Rock the Block" store concept, and questions have been raised about the ability of the chain to survive.
