Blu-ray Association Claims 2.7 Million Sold
The Blu-ray Disc Association released figures this week indicating that 2.7 million Blu-ray players have been sold since the format launched last year- about 2 million of which are PlayStation 3 consoles, according to HighDefDigest.com.
HD DVD’s own promotions group had said, after its radically discounted sales both before and on Black Friday, that it had sold 750,000 players, a figure which included both Xbox add-ons as well as standalone players. The Blu-ray group then responded by including the PS3 sales in its latest numbers.
The Blu-ray backers added that 72.6 percent of high-def discs sold during Thanksgiving week were in their format. That particular week included several major Blu-ray releases, including “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Hairspray,” while the only significant HD DVD release of the week was first-season box set for “Star Trek: The Original Series.”
