Borders, Sony Team Up on E-Book Store
In an attempt to compete with Amazon and its new Kindle book-reading device, brick-and-mortar bookstore Borders this week announced that it is launching an e-book store of its own, in co-branding its offerings for the Sony Reader product. Over 25,000 books will be initially available in Reader-ready format.
In addition, customers who buy a digital book at a Borders store will be given software to access the new site. The Reader itself is available in Borders stores nationwide, and has been since Sony and Borders announced an agreement in the fall.
“By adding the opportunity through the co-branded online store to purchase e-book downloads, we are now meeting our customers’ needs fully, from device to a vast array of titles,” Borders executive Kevin Ertell said in a statement issued by the company.
