In short, the industry needs Circuit City, several industry leaders said. “We all need them,” Glikes said. “Worse comes to worse, they’ll go bankrupt, shed a third or half of their stores, and they’ll be fine.”
In Southern California, Circuit City’s survival is low on Steve Caldero’s list of concerns. Like Fry’s and Best Buy, Circuit has sought to move inventory by lowering prices, forcing others to do the same, said Caldero, senior vice president and COO of Ken Crane’s Home Entertainment.
“We’re matching prices here and there and taking the value out of the flat-panel sale,” he said. “For six months, Circuit has been aggressive on pricing.”
