CE Retailer Jewel Fischman Abt Dies at 96
CHICAGO—Sixty-seven years ago, Abt Electronics was founded in Chicago by Hungarian native Jewel Fischman Abt and her husband David. On October 19, she died in her sleep at the family home at 96 years old.
Abt originally worked at her family's grocery store chain until she and her husband ventured into the consumer electronics business. Using her savings, her son Robert Abt said that his parents opened a small store in the Logan Square section of town. The store eventually expanded across the street and then expanded three more times until the last store opened in 2002 in Glenview, Illinois. According to family, the matriarch stayed active in the family business well into her 70s after retiring.
Fischman Abt was six years old when her family immigrated to the United States. She went on to graduate from a junior college with a degree in economics that she later put to use in both the grocery chain, as well as the consumer electronics stores she and her husband later established.
