Shapiro Receives Media Institute's American Horizon Award
Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association, has received the annual American Horizon Award from the Media Institute, a Washington research foundation specializing in communications policy and the First Amendment. Shapiro is the first recipient who does not come directly from the media industry.
In his acceptance remarks at a black-tie banquet in Washington last week, Shapiro characterized himself as a "representative of an industry which has fundamentally changed how the world sends and receives information.""The value of technology as a tool of personal freedom of expression is now unquestioned," he said, noting that there are now questions about "whether the United States can remain the epicenter of the world of creativity and innovation."
"We have a unique recipe for our American success in innovation and creativity: the First Amendment, attracting the best and brightest, a free market system that encourages reward, a great nation readily trading with the world," Shapiro added.
