CEO Wedge Resigns From BJ Wholesale Club
Mike Wedge, president and chief executive officer of BJ’s Wholesale Club, announced his resignation today. Taking over as interim CEO will be Herb Zarkin, chairman of the retailer’s board of directors, while the board searches for a new CEO.
In a statement attributed to both Wedge and Zarkin it was said, “While the company has made great strides in its efforts to improve general merchandise sales and customer traffic, overall progress has not come as quickly as we had hoped and expected. We agree that the company’s leadership team will benefit from a fresh perspective at this time.”
Herb Zarkin, chairman of the retailer’s board of directors, was named interim CEO. The board will conduct a search for a successor. Wedge was with BJ’s for 18 years and served as CEO for four. Wedge had been with company for 18 years, serving in this role since September 2002. Also this month BJ’s launched an e-commerce component to it’s Web site.
