Sony Corp. President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida underscored the company’s mantra as a “creative entertainment company” whose reach extends well beyond consumer electronics, making a splash at Sony’s CES press conference Jan. 6 with the unveiling of Vision-S - a concept automobile that will be realized with the help of automotive partners, and that he said was built on an EV (electric vehicle) platform. He said it features “world-class imaging and sensing technologies,” to the tune of 33 inside and outside sensors. The vehicle also boasts an iteration of Sony’s 360 Reality Audio object-based spatial audio technology.
“Mobility will be the next megatrend,” Yoshida said, noting that “safety is an essential aspect of mobility.” Of the Vision-S initiative, he said, “The evolution of mobility will redefine cars as the new entertainment space.”
At the event, Sony also marked the 25th anniversary of its PlayStation brand, with the announcement of a next-generation PlayStation 5, which Jim Ryan, PlayStation president and CEO, said is set to deploy for the 2020 holiday sales season - along with a new logo.
He rattled off a roster of impressive sales stats achieved by the seven-year-old PlayStation platform: 105 million PS4 systems sold, 1.15 billion PS4 games sold, and 103 million annual active users. The next-gen model will be Ultra HD Blu-ray-compatible and other features include 3D audio sound, ultra-high-speed SSD technology, haptics and adaptive triggers, and hardware-based ray tracing.
The company isn’t resting on its laurels when it comes to the TV category, either. At its CES booth, it is showcasing the premium Bravia Z8H 8K LED TV, among other TV intros that include the A8H and MASTER Series A9S OLED, and X950H and X900H 4K LED televisions. The new Sony large-screen TV lineup features proprietary technologies previously only found in Sony’s MASTER Series models.
Some features cited by the company and found in various models throughout the new line include Sony’s Picture Processor X1, Sound-from-Picture Reality, which aligns the position of the sound with the images on the screen, Netflix Calibrated Mode, offering studio-quality Netflix content, and IMAX Enhanced. The line also introduces the Ambient Optimization feature, a technology that optimizes picture and sound quality in any home environment via Acoustic Auto Calibration, which detects where the customer views their TV from during initial setup and calibrates sound quality based on the environment.
