These were learning experiences for Ergen and DeFranco, teaching them valuable lessons about the real life of both retailers and distributors. "We learned from the school of hard knocks," noted DeFranco.
The two men grew their small retail business into a flourishing wholesale business by 1981, but they never forgot the value of those retail experiences. "Because we started as retailers, we understood the consumer," said DeFranco.
Described as "the big picture man" by one company spokesperson, Ergen is the visionary member of the team with a knack for seeing opportunities before others do. DeFranco, on the other hand, developed a knack for the business side of the operation, overseeing the sales force, negotiating deals with key retailers such as Target, Bradleys and H.H. Gregg.
