Consumer Reports Rates Converter Boxes
The magazine Consumer Reports has rated 14 separate analog-to-digital converter boxes, in anticipation of the analog signal shutoff in February 2009.
Among those earning the highest marks were the Tivax STB-T9 ($50) and Microgem MG200 ($65), based on picture quality. The magazine recommended that users first choose a model based on picture quality, and then considering additional features. The editors also pointed out that the more expensive models are not necessarily the of the best quality.
“We want to help consumers find a model that will give them the best viewing experience for the best price,” the magazine’s electronics editor, Paul Reynolds, said in a statement announcing the June 2008 issue, which includes the converter box ratings.
