Contacts: Gail Dallas, concierge at H&H Lifestyles in Brunswick, Ga.
When Gail Dallas took a job at a Georgia furniture and appliance store sixteen and a half years ago, her job description was straightforward: receptionist. “I answered phones,” says 56-year-old Dallas. “I can talk to anybody, I just think people on any level are so interesting...so I was a good fit.” Dallas is still the first voice customers hear when they call or walk in the door of H&H, but the store and Dallas’s role in it have evolved into something much more complex. “I’m the concierge,” says Dallas of her island desk at the entrance to the brand new H&H Lifestyles store in the Glynn Isles Market shopping center. “I love my little area, though at first I had to get used to being alone out here in ‘time out!’”
Dallas’s job as a guiding concierge is a critical part of a retail operation that now encompasses consumer electronics, home automation products, low-to-high-end appliances and bedding. H&H Lifestyles, currently run by third-generation retailers Tre Brunson and Laurie Watson, has the potential to sell and upsell a wide variety of products to the 75,000 people who live in the Brunswick market and the many more who come to visit the nearby Georgia coast...but only if customers come in and linger long enough to experience new technologies. That’s where Dallas comes in. Her friendly greeting (“How are ya’ll today?”) sets the tone for a relaxed shopping encounter with some of the most advanced home automation products many Georgians have ever seen first-hand. She doesn’t try to sell customers on anything herself, she just points them in the right direction.
“People don’t want a hard sell, they want to look around,” says Dallas, flashing a broad smile. “They’ll see, it’s really cool in here...I want everything in the store!”
