Contacts: Mike Orlowski, Owner of Alpine Vista Home Theaters (Breckenridge, CO)
The holiday rush may be over, but January and February don’t slow down in Breckenridge, Colorado, an old-style Victorian mining town turned modern ski mecca. Mike Orlowski, a Breckenridge local year-round, says Interstate 70 (the one that shoots out from Denver) is bumper to bumper every weekend this time of year, full of people looking for excellent “powder days.” But rather than bemoan the crowded conditions, Orlowski, owner of Alpine Vista Home Theaters, is looking for new ways to market CE to out-of-towners.
“This is really a 2nd-home market,” says Orlowski. “95% of my clients are buying products for their vacation homes, and since many are affluent, they are looking for ways to stay in that 2nd home more and more...I’ve seen a big rise in the demand for WiFi capability and anything that will let them work remotely, like equipment for videoconferencing.”
Orlowski says he’s learned to sell some affordable home control products as well, like Control 4 monitors that allow vacation-home owners to change the thermostat while they’re on the highway or automatically receive e-mail notifications about weather changes. “People like to monitor outdoor cameras a lot now,” says Orlowski. “They want to see if it’s snowing, but even more, they like to see if the guy came to plow the driveway!”
