Contrary to Rumors, Wal-Mart, HD DVD Have No Deal
Wal*Mart on Friday shot down rumors that had circulated for over a week that it had agreed to a deal with a Taiwan-based manufacturer to purchase two million high-definition DVD players for discount sale in the U.S., PC Magazine reported.
The report, which first appeared on an Internet forum discussion and later spread to numerous technology blogs, came about due to a mistake in translation from the original Chinese. It had made it appear that Wal*Mart had chosen to take the side of HD DVD, which if true may have struck a decisive blow in its ongoing format war with Blu-ray. In fact, Wal*Mart said Friday that it will continue to carry both formats until a winner in the format war in determined.
Fuhyuan, the Taiwan-based manufacturer said in reports to be the supplier, issued a statement late last week indicating that while such a deal is possible, reports that a deal had been struck were not accurate.
