Control for the Middle Class: The Affordable and Retrofittable at CEDIA
Sales trainers at Control 4, a home automation company that’s been shipping since May ‘05, have a saying they use to make sure middle-class Americans never leave CE stores without at least considering a few smart-home features: “No TV left behind.”
“It means, ‘What are you selling with that TV?’” explains Control 4 President and COO Glen Mella, who believes that any customer interested in a smart remote is more than ready to hear a short pitch about multi-room audio, lighting and temperature control. “We’re not just going after millionaires with new homes,” says Mella.
Retrofitting existing houses with relatively affordable, often wireless, mood-setting electronics is a theme at this week’s CEDIA, where manufacturers and custom installers are looking for ways to reach broader markets in an age of sluggish housing starts.
