Corner Office Christmas Always Comes, Part II
The marriage of the fashion and consumer electronics industry is bringing cutting-edge chic to the functionality of the CE world. The success of recent product releases from the iMac computer to the Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan Palm devices have shown that there is a market for CE devices that allow consumers to express their individuality.
With the trend toward fashion in CE accessories, the potential market is tremendous. CEA market research shows strong consumer interest in faceplates for cell phones and PDAs, headphones for personal electronics and carrying cases for camcorders and cameras. Within the last two years, 83 percent of consumers bought a CE product and 40 percent of all CE purchases result in at least one accessory purchase within two years. If each consumer were to purchase just one accessory item, this would imply a minimum potential market of $340 million. 2001 will bring sales of accessory items to a strong $1.6 billion with the market expected to increase to $1.7 billion in 2002.
