"The future of VR is dependent on quality content and, with this study we wanted to provide a more comprehensive look at Hollywood's attitudes on the many opportunities and challenges this technology faces," NATPE President and CEO Rod Perth said in a statement. "This study presents a snapshot of the types of genres that could be adapted to this dynamic technology but also offers a realistic picture of its limitations."
Further, those content creators interviewed for the study indicated that there are a number of potential challenges that exist that are impacting the mass adoption of VR like the lack of availability of quality content, the slow rate of headset purchases, concerns of a solitary experience, and technical issues with filming the content.
That said, most agreed that VR presents a new method of storytelling that offers an entirely new platform for consumers to experience entertainment and many other types of content—way beyond just gaming applications. Simply put: It’s not just a fad.
