D&H Brings Convergence on the Road
“Digital convergence continues to gain more traction,” said Dan Schwab, VP of marketing for D&H at the distributor’s 5th Annual Digital Convergence Expo in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. The event brought together about 500 attendees (60 percent digital integrators and 40 percent A/V installers) and about 40 vendors/suppliers for a day of seminars, networking and product demonstrations.
The diverse makeup of the vendors, ranging from traditional CE companies like Samsung, JVC, and Coby to IT-centric companies like Yellow Machine, Acer and HP to crossover products such as Sling Media and Buffalo, point to the mix of interests of the attendees and the overall theme of the show: convergence. Highlighting that theme was Intel, showing off it’s new Viiv platform and products in both the expo portion and a special afternoon keynote. During the Viiv presentation, Intel’s Chase LoGreco and Ken Maynor talked about how the Viiv platform will energize the digital lifestyle allowing easy integration of media and technologies.
Schwab sees a lot of potential in Viiv as well, which is why the distributor is putting so much effort behind promoting it. “I think it starts bringing it (convergence) together,” said Schwab. “We’re always waiting for the [convergence] wave to crest and it always seems like itís a year away, but the biggest challenge to that happening is driving a) the interoperability of all the technologies--making them plug and play and b) the consumer awareness. Most people don’t know what Sling Box is, most people don’t know you can plug your MP3 player into your network and listen to it out buy the pool, most people don’t know you can stream your digital pictures to your TV. We’re waiting for the tier one big box retailers to start driving consumer awareness, even though they’re going to become competitors, they’re also going to drive awareness and grow the market.”
