According to a recent study by IMS Research, CRT television sets will continue to dominate the market for the next two years, in spite of flat panels’ increasing market share. The study also forecasts that 2006 will be the first year that flat panel sales outperform CRT. The study, The Worldwide Market for Television Sets, predicts that, in time, flat panel displays will account for 68 percent of what will be nearly 211 million sets shipped globally.
The report cites several key elements in this shift, including increasing adoption of widescreen as a preferred viewing medium, wider availability of high definition programming and efforts by major suppliers to cut back on CRT shipments.
Anna Hunt, research director at IMS Research, adds, “Quickly falling prices of flat panel displays are enabling a true transformation in the TV set market. LCDs are expected to become the leader in terms of units shipped as early as 2007 in certain industrialized countries due to availability in various sizes at acceptable price points.”
