Dealer Data: It’s Not Always Easy Being Green
Make sure to check out next month’s cover story on the “greening” of CE to find out how retailers, with a little planning and insight, are creating their own in-house “green” campaigns. The process is relatively easy and the ROI is high. But when you begin to look at the big picture and try to follow state recycling legislation, things get a bit more complicated.
For example, California, Maine, Maryland and Washington (representing about 50 million residents or 16 percent of the population) were among the first three states with comprehensive recycling initiatives. Each state has different recycling rules and regulations. That problem will create deeper confusion as more states jump on the green bandwagon and develop their own legislation.
Failure to follow the legislation can result in fines for the manufacturer and the retailer. What’s needed, CE industry leaders say, is a standardized, comprehensive bill that will remove much of the guess work in trying to figure out which recycling rules apply to each state.
