DisplaySearch, a television research firm that is part of The NPD Group, recently released worldwide Q1’06 shipments and revenues for plasma TVs by brand, region, size and resolution. According to their research, worldwide plasma TV shipments rose 87 percent, year-over-year, while falling 26 percent, quarter-over-quarter, to 1.7 million units, which the group says is due to seasonal weakness coupled with new model transitions and supply constraints. The hot sellers are in the 40- to 40-inch range with almost 65 percent share, with Panasonic leading the pack for all plasma sizes, followed by LG and Samsung. Interestingly, Vizio, a newcomer in plasma space, took seventh place, representing a 150 percent quarter-over-quarter increase. As for revenues the story is mixed for plasma, being up 19 percent in Q1 over 2005’s 15 percent, but down from 2004’s 20 percent. Average prices are dropping, falling 25 percent, year-over-year with an average price of $2,353.
