Despite the fact that a robust network drives excellent product demos and displays, dealers report little vendor support for network infrastructure. Most dealers are paying for the hardware from their own pocket and using in-house labor for installation to keep costs low. "The problem is retailers spread their business among many vendors, so [vendors] have to cooperate, which won't happen; my two cents," said Sherman.
Wexler would be happy if component manufactures would just make sure their gear was compatible and "if the network guys had better training...," he said, adding that some do offer online training. Asked about the possibility of financial support for network infrastructure, Wexler fires back: "Yeah right, financial support on our level from a computer-oriented parts company, I'll hold my breath."
