Dealerscope 40 Under 40 Profiles: Schuler, Smith, Sy, Thielen, Trock, Venn, Wiener, Williams
The final eight profiles of this year's Dealerscope 40 Under 40:
Matthew Schuler, 35, Western Regional Sales Manager, Klipsch Group
Background: Grew up in Santa Ynez, Calif. (20 minutes north of Santa Barbara); now live in Studio City, Calif.
Education: San Diego State University, San Diego, Calif.; B.A., Political Science
Years in Industry:14
Description of Role: Maximize sales in the western third of the U.S. while maintaining channel management between the three channels I support: Mass Retail, Specialty Retail and Custom Integration. I have one direct employee that reports to me on a few major Klipsch and Jamo accounts as well as five rep firms that report to me on the Klipsch business.
Industry Accomplishments/Proudest Achievements: The accomplishment in CE I’m most proud of would be my stint as the Headphone Czar in North America and Latin America. I added, with the help of my team, over 14,500 storefronts in the U.S. market to carry Klipsch headphones in 2.5 years. This brought the Klipsch brand to the aisles and peg hooks of retail outlets where our brand had never been in the previous 65+ years, creating untold
exposure for Klipsch and making me a ton
Awards: 2006 Outstanding Customer Service and Support—Dennis Sage Home Entertainment; 2007 Rep of the Year—Dennis Sage Entertainment; 2011 Young Turks of CE—Custom Retailer; 2014 CE Vendor of the Year—NewEgg.com
What I Like Best About My Job: As a kid, all I wanted to be when I grew up was the man in a suit with a briefcase at the airport going somewhere to do something important. That is exactly what I became. I love it.
What I Like Least About My Job: I still haven’t solved the age-old dilemma of how to sell something to [every] type of customer (Custom Integration, Specialty Retail, Mass Retail, Online Retail, Brick & Click, and Distribution) in every channel in a conflict-free, non-disruptive manner. This never-ending pursuit keeps me up at night.
Favorite Pastime/Hobby: Ripping up the desert or mountain on my dirt bike each weekend.
Last Book I Read: Trust Me, I’m Lying: Confessions from a Media Manipulator by Ryan Holiday
Favorite Movie: Three-way tie between Braveheart, Fight Club and Back to the Future
Best Concert Ever Seen: Prince (Was dragged to a concert kicking and screaming by a girlfriend back in college. Was blown away and have subsequently seen him five more times since.)
Who’s My Hero: Parents—the two best people I know.
Favorite CE Product of the Year: It’s biased, but the Klipsch Reference WiSA system we are launching this fall will be the game-changer in 2015. People have been asking me for wireless speakers for home theater since I started in this business in 2001 at Good Guys. I would always laugh it off and say, “Oh no, that’s like 10 to 15 years off.” Well, it is finally here. It works. It’s a consumer’s dream, and sounds utterly amazing.
If You Could Be Anyplace Else Right Now, Where Would it Be and What Would You Be Doing?: Someplace I have never been, on either my dirt bike, mountain bike or snowboard, is always my preferred place to be. Adventure rules!
