Carl Gish, the company's general manager for hardlines, points to the wealth and education of Amazon.com's consumer base as a factor contributing to robust sales.
"We have 29 million customers, and the demographics are skewed toward higher education, higher income," Gish said. "Twenty-nine percent of our customers have a household income of $100,000 per year or more, and 54 percent have college education or higher."
Because of the money they make and the degrees they've earned, these consumers tend to be early adapters, Gish said. They like their toys. They view the Internet, according to Amazon.com customer surveys, as the perfect place to buy their CE goodies. They want a large selection of those goods. And with busy careers, they like the convenience of 24-hour shopping from home.
