Will Dell's Smartphone for China Go Global?
Dell Inc. will enter the wireless handset market with a "proof-of-concept" smartphone designed for China Mobile. The "Mini3i"device, which will run on the Google Android operating system, is described by Dell as offering "a more personalized Internet experience" for China Mobile customers.
Neither Dell nor China Mobile has disclosed a timetable for rolling out the product, which will support games, music and other applications. Nor has Dell indicated its plans to introduce its smartphones into other markets - a fascinating prospect given the wireless marketing changes that may emerge after the current FCC examination of mobile phone sales practices. For Dell, the move into smartphones represents a reversal of its previous stance that handsets offered too small a margin. Dell already sells netbooks in partnerships with China Mobile, AT&T in the U.S. and several European wireless carriers.
