Black Friday Sales Rise
Despite all of the worries related to today's economy, retailers actually reported a small increase over the year before in sales on the weekend that began with Black Friday.
According to figures released Sunday by the National Retail Federation, in conjunction with BIGresearch, 172 million shoppers spent an average of $372.57, for a total of around $41 billion.
The spending-per-shopper figure, which applies to both stores and Web sites, rose 7.2 percent from 2007. 73.6 million of the shoppers did so on Black Friday itself. More than half of those who shopped visited discount stores.
