For savvy retailers, there’s a lot of potential revenue to be had in the burgeoning esports category. Specifically, there’s a major opportunity readily available as esports continues to expand across college campuses throughout the country. Collegiate esports athletes have equipment needs, and retailers ought to be there to help fill those gaps—something that D&H Distributing has placed a major emphasis on in recent years.
At its regional distributor events over the past few years, D&H has carved out space on the show floor to specifically highlight the various gaming vendors and their offerings. In that time, the tech distributor has built up a rather formidable lineup of brands and solutions that cover the gaming arena—names like Acer, ASUS, Dell, CORSAIR, HP, Intel, Lenovo, Kingston (HyperX), LG, Logitech, MSI, NVIDIA, Samsung, Sennheiser, ViewSonic, and more.
Their commitment to the category was uniquely put on display in mid-July as the Harrisburg, PA-based distributor took part in the 2019 2nd Annual NACE Convention (National Association of Collegiate eSports). The event, which was conveniently located in D&H’s hometown, saw the distributor participate in a keynote panel that explored tech trends and the exponential growth of the esports category, specifically at the college level. And at their booth at NACE, D&H brought out their vendor partner HP to spotlight the computer manufacturer’s high-performance OMEN gaming PCs.
“We’ve been witness to an explosion in the eSports category. Collegiate gaming has escalated to where students have received full scholarships and earn national recognition,” D&H Co-president Dan Schwab said in a statement. “As the segment matures, D&H will serve as the go-to destination for these innovative brands and solutions. Products run the gamut from high-speed processing and video cards, to video walls and large-scale signage, sophisticated gaming headsets, power solutions, networking products, and a host of components that deliver the competitive edge required for eSports teams to excel. This represents a significant opportunity for savvy retailers and dealers looking to add revenues.”
Beyond their participation at the NACE convention, D&H has been a strong supporter of local collegiate esports in their area. The distributor helped to support the establishment of PA’s first esports team at Harrisburg University (the Storm) in 2017, and they worked with HP and other partners to help develop an esports arena at the nearby Whitaker Center the following year. Around the time of the NACE convention, D&H hosted the Storm team members at its headquarters where they took part in a Q&A with D&H employee co-owners and partner representatives to discuss their equipment needs and technology preferences—both on campus and during arena competitions.
