NFL, DirecTV Reach Extension
DirecTV has extended its exclusive deal with the NFL to cover the NFL Sunday Ticket package, agreeing to pay $4 billion total to extend the pact through 2014, the Wall Street Journal reported. The deal was to run out after the 2010 season.
The previous deal paid the league around $700 million per year. The Sunday Ticket package allows at-home viewers, as well as sports bars, the chance to watch every NFL game each Sunday, as opposed to the handful of games featured on broadcast TV. The deal allayed fears from the league that the economic climate would lead to smaller TV contracts going forward.
