DOT: Research Could Lead to Ban on In-Car Phones
GRAPEVINE, TEX.- The Secretary of Transportation said last week that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting research into texting-while-driving which may lead the department to push for a ban on any use of mobile phones while driving.
This development caused great concern for some attendees at the MERA KnowledgeFest event in Dallas.
According to Bloomberg News, Secretary Ray LaHood said in an interview that "I don’t want people talking on phones, having them up to their ear or texting while they’re driving." LaHood has previously led efforts to curb texting while driving, with 30 states passing restrictions on that activity.
Any ban would have to be passed legislatively, most likely at the state level.
