DVD Recordable Media--Is This the Year?
Philips has been demonstrating a home recording device at trade shows for nearly a year that uses DVD+RW. This format also claims to play back on existing DVD players.
John Spofford, vice president and general manager of personal storage solutions for HP, said the company would begin shipping a DVD+RW drive in late summer/early fall. Calling it a Super Drive, it would be priced under $1,000 and would also write and rewrite CDs. Media makers Ricoh and MCC/Verbatim will supply media in both write-once and rewritable versions.
"Consumers are going to vote with their money," Spofford said, adding that the mass market adoption of DVD recording would probably not happen until prices reach a level that the market would bear, as it did with DVD players.
