DVD+RW Pulls Further Ahead
The "odd man in" at the event was Sony, which is still actively representing itself in the DVD+RW alliance, but it currently taking a much different route in its product road map. At an event a few days prior to PC Expo, Sony released a VAIO Digital Studio PC with Giga Pocket personal video recording software. Outfitted with a built-in television tuner and an 80 GB hard drive, the PC can store up to 100 hours of TV and copy it via a DVD-RW recording drive.
The company joined in supporting DVD-RW last January and at a CES DVD-RW event said that it was researching a combination drive that would write both formats, but at the DVD+RW event last week, Sony officials denied that the company ever had such intentions.
